How to Rotate Tires

Removing a wheel from a vehicle

As part of our mission to provide stellar Gardena customer services, we’ve compiled a comprehensive guide on “How to rotate tires.” Proper tire rotation can extend the life of your tires, improve gas mileage, and ensure that your car handles steadily and predictably when turning or when Carson roads are slippery.

How to Do a Tire Rotation: Guide

  1. Lift the Vehicle: Using a car jack, lift one end of the vehicle off the ground. Make sure to follow safety guidelines and support the vehicle with jack stands.
  2. Remove the Tires: Using a lug wrench, remove the lug nuts and take off the tires.
  3. Follow the Rotation Pattern: Swap the tires according to the pattern specified in the owner’s manual. Common patterns include moving the front tires to the rear and the rear tires to the front, sometimes crossing them diagonally.
  4. Reinstall the Tires: Put the tires back on the hubs and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  5. Lower the Vehicle: Carefully lower the vehicle using the jack and remove the jack stands.
  6. Tighten the Lug Nuts: Tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench in a star pattern to the manufacturer’s recommended torque, using a torque wrench if possible.
  7. Check Tire Pressure: Ensure all the tires are inflated to the proper pressure specified in the owner’s manual.
  8. Repeat for Other Side: If you only lifted one end of the vehicle, repeat the process for the other end.

Tips and Considerations

  • Rotating tires every 5,000 to 7,500 miles is recommended.
  • Always refer to your car’s owner’s manual for any specific guidelines regarding tire rotation.
  • If you notice uneven wear patterns, get your alignment checked.
